Montana Public Radio

Annie Garde and I are guest hosting my favorite show tomorrow, Thursday, spinning CD's from a collection donated by the late Bob Knight. He was a huge supporter of the jazz scene in Missoula and beyond, and had excellent (and eclectic) taste as you will "see." we will feature lots of guitar - Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, Russel Malone with Ray Brown and West Montgomery with The Boss, Jimmy Smith, plus Jack McDuff, speaking of Hammond B-3 organ. And some lovely Catherine Russell, Ella, and Ahmad and Oscar Peterson, O.P.! Left of the FM dial from 2 until 4 pm, MST and live on the web.

New Painting

Working in the office today with help from Mischa, rolling ink on a new Claybord of a Bald Eagle. Not a porcupine as had I planned to continue my mammal fix, so a bird for now. This is so much fun.

Newspaper Story

Reporter Jessica Abell contacted us about a cheerful story on our birds indoors, and four were in here for a week. The last to exit was Little Billie the Northern Saw-whet Owl and he probably wondered what that was all about. Jessica asked about winterizing the enclosures and living with Raptors In the House, maybe the title - in the Ravalli Republic, maybe Missoulian this Saturday.

House Birds

Temperatures this morning -28 degrees F and birds in the house starting a two nights ago. Looks like they'll be here helping me for a while longer - Sibley because she's nearly 21 years old, Sonora the Aplomado (and Desert Bird), Little Billie the Saw-whet in a kennel for safety, and Mischa the Peregrine because she's spoiled. They have been enjoying a nice selection of jazz on the stereo, and I've gone through a stack of Wall Street Journals, if you know what I mean.

Bitterroot Birds

This pair of Red-tailed Hawks is at Metcalf Refuge, and shows reverse sexual size dimorphism (RSSD), larger female on the pole. That is only the 2nd Red-tail I have ever seen standing on a utility wire, the other one is a little male that hangs out near Lolo on 93, one certain spot on the west side. He just shows up every now and then for years, and I can't believe it's the same bird. But it's the same location north of Trader Brothers, same peculiar hunting behavior, and not lately. I always wish I had my camera but then I would have to pull over on The Bitterroot 500, scary.
