Sonny the Bald Eagle Surgery

Our hero, Dr. Scott Bovard at Missoula Veterinary performed the removal of a huge growth at the tip of our Bald Eagle's wing today. Sonny joined us as an adult eight years ago, and Dr. Scott over twenty years ago as our vet. Sonny banged that wingtip in the 40 foot enclosure and had a infected ball as big as a lemon, removed with some bone by Scott. Thanks and recovery news on the way.

 

Sunday Snow

As promised and kind of sporadic. Our resident Pheasies in the front yard just now. And Sib flying earlier this week. Two very different seasons, and wish I'd wound up the garden hoses going out to the hawk buildings...yesterday!

I'll be back on Montana Public Radio, this time with birds and two guests. Host Annie Garde is the skipper of the Pea Green Boat childrens' programming from 4-5 pm weekdays, and this time we'll have falcons and an owl in the studio.  Little Jake the Peregrine will have his radio debut, and his namesake 8-year-old Jake and his brother Luke Snowden are joining us. 1989 to 2019

My first etching, "A Clockwork Owl" on zinc with nitric oxide.
Now the new one, "Great Horned Owl and Offspring" 9 1/2" x 10 1/2" dry-point on plastic and water-based inks, gouache paints and Arteza Brush Pens -  30 years later exactly!

Little Jake Today

I did a little experiment with Little Jake today when I drove to Missoula to go see my Mom.  He was installed in the back of then Subaru without a hood (!) and he did the whole trip there and back looking out the window. A trip to Rockin Rudy’s to deliver some cards - here with Bruce Micklus, then an hour in Mom’s living room without a peep or any problem. (And yes, Mom has a stuffed Mountain Lion on her piano….gave it to her in my taxidermy days!) What a champ you are, Little Jake.

He has his debut on Montana Public Radio next Thursday the 26th at 4 - 5 pm, and will remind you to tune in, Pea Green Boat with Annie.

Two Birds

Sib starts her 17th hunting season, flying like a pro already and only a few swoops on the puppy. One big happy family now as Mookie and Nico hunt 'em up.
And, newly hatched homing pigeon, love these guys!

Jazz Sessions

Sure enjoyed my guest DJ spot on Montana Public Radio yesterday! I used to tape Jazz Sessions when I was in college living in the dorms, cassette days. Host Terry Conrad had Annie Garde and me take over for two hours and I spent days stacking up the CD's at home,  blue sticky notes and the song number written in red. A big stack, and we really didn't spin any vinyl from the KUFM collection.

Annie Garde and I are hosting Jazz Sessions on Montana Public Radio today, 2-4 pm MST. 89.1 in Missoula, left of the dial across the west, and streaming at https://www.mtpr.org Wes, Jaco, Freddie, and even Robben (Ford!) Then a visit on Pea Green Boat at after the jazz. No birds this time but Little Jake will be on soon.

Little Jake the Helper

Yep. Helping me with the new Great Horned Owls etching up in the studio the last two days. He started screaming when in the house a few weeks ago for some weird reason, but doesn't make a peep in the studio, merci beaucoup. New etching finished by the middle of the week, whew.

Pretty much the only action on the beach last night, Mookie and Nico. That and some Killdeer. Oh and a Bald Eagle, two fishermen and a big flock of ducks. That's it.
