Transmitters?

"Transmitters? I don’t need no stinkin’ transmitters!" A line from one of my favorite movies, 1948's "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.” Humphrey Bogart classic  and the Mexicans say “badges” but you knew that.

Our House

Right now.  Mischa the Peregrine's hangout most days, and thanks Mike for the newspapers. She'll be inside along with two other falcons for nights this week with temps well below zero. That's what they say at least. Yes, that's Nico the dog, a stuffed peacock, metal raven sculpture, and Aaron Copeland record.

Sib Today

Yes, old transmitters and thankfully rarely needed to locate a missing bird over these many years! 20 in all.

Cincinnati Zoo

I have been working on my PowerPoint for the Cincinnati Zoo speaking engagement on April 19th, searching the animal archives. Here I am at age 14 I think, albino ferret from the Children's Zoo and my job was to tame him down. I can't remember how long he was with us but recall he liked to swim in the bathtub. He also loved to play on our second-hand pool table in the basement, popping up at the different pockets and the collie dog circled around barking. Let's just say, not my parents' favorite "pet" and back to the zoo...

Tomial Tooth

All summer and fall we were lucky enough to have whole organic chickens from Living River Farms in Stevensville.  I let the Peregrines feast on whole drumsticks, and Mischa especially broke off the ends of the bones. Just before Christmas, she broke off a chunk of her beak, this week losing that falcon "tomial tooth"on the upper mandible, used for breaking the necks on birds (top photo at 2 months of age.) Scott Bovard expertly flattened the jagged edges with a Dremel tool, as I was too nervous to try! Beaks are keratin like fingernails, constantly growing and this will take a while...

Mischa Beak

Peregrine Pal Mischa broke a chunk of her beak off cracking a chicken drumstick just before Christmas and I have been totally going crazy trying to figure out what to do. Here is our favorite veterinarian Dr. Scott Bovard, Missoula Veterinary Clinic smiling (and me on the left reflection in the window, Nico in the back seat) today. Solved, mostly and more news tomorrow.

Sib

A quick flight in the Bitterroot yesterday at her favorite spot for 20 years, huffing and puffing!
