Roxy Night

Don't forget our Falconry Program at the Roxy Theater tonight, sponsored by the International Wildlife Film Festival and Patagonia! Game Hawker film, then a short film by me, PowerPoint, and Sib and Sonora on stage - 5:30 pm and ticket sales to benefit Raptors of the Rockies and IWFF.

Odd Ospreys Yesterday

What is going on at the near-by cell phone tower, occupied by Ospreys the last several summers? The nest is still occupied a month (or more) later than normal. Many of the adult females are already migrating south, males then young to follow. Here the female and one should-be-fledged await delivery of this big rainbow trout. Weird. Wonder if it is from all of the rays and flickers of cell phone energy? Not very scientific, sorry.

Roxy Music

Just kidding about the Music (one of my favorite bands) but we will be at The Roxy Theater on Tuesday at 5:30, a program I have been working on with great gusto, Falconry: An Exhilarating Lifestyle.  This title comes from a story I wrote for a magazine in 2007. In another story I was featured in for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks in 2009 I say," Falconry is not just a sport. It's a complete and all-consuming lifestyle. I basically try to talk people out of it." No apologies. See a duck in the second photo? And see you at The Roxy!

Next Tuesday

I met with Carrie Richer, Director of the International Wildlife Film Festival for a preview of our program at The Roxy Theater next Tuesday. First we will watch the 25 minute documentary made by Patagonia, Game Hawker, then a presentation on falconry the big screen by me. We'll have Sonora the Aplomado and Sib the Peregrine along for the ride, FUN! Tickets at the Roxy, show at 5:30 Aug 30th. More news on the way.

The Book Exchange

Join us tomorrow afternoon at The Book Exchange for our Falcon Fest, from 1-3 pm, in Missoula at Tremper's Shopping Center.  I'll have Sibley the Peregrine and Wes the Kestrel, along with some little videos on the lap top... and the "new" Falcons of North America book. These panels have been slightly updated, and they used to be on display at the Missoula Airport,  20-something years ago!

What Is A Barn Owl Doing Here?

Saturday's drama, a Barn Owl was trapped in the basement at the Fort Missoula Military Museum, reported to me yesterday by Tate Jones, curator. We climbed around down there with flashlights and found it 30 feet back in an impossible spot to retrieve. Tate decided to just open the door to the stairs, light pouring in, and an hour later, out flew the bird, did a few laps over the museum and flew away! We were discussing military history for a half hour, thank goodness, so witnessed the escape. Barn Owls are quite rare in these parts, especially underground in basements.

Hummingbird Haven

A couple dozen hummers in the yard for a week now and today's fight between a Rufous and Black-chinned, bumblebee in the background.

Waspy Shot

Wonder what this is, I guess a wasp. I love the Kaufman "Field Guide to Insects of North America," my favorite. Check out page 304 that talks about how blow flies are used in criminal forensic science to determine time of death!

Misch In Training

Flying on a line from perch to perch, to lure and to glove. Today Nico dropped a stick at her feet a few times for her to toss. I am not kidding. Smart dog.
